Background

What is the MHRN-C:

MHRN-C is an all Wales Network funded by NISCHR (Formerly the Wales Office of R&D). The network supports vital large-scale research which will help to raise the standard of mental health and social care research and practice throughout Wales. It is a Research Group within NISCHR CRC. We have strong links with the mental health charities HAFAL and Mind Cymru.

Our Remit:

The network supports vital large-scale research to increase the quality and quantity of mental health research in Wales and to help to raise the standard of mental health and social care research and practice throughout Wales, the UK and internationally.  There are close links with the Mental Health research networks in England and Scotland with whom we run joint projects across the UK. Within Wales there is close working with other Research Groups of NISCHR CRC particularly NEURODEM Cymru, the Wales Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network, and LDAN, the Learning Disability and Autism Research Network in Wales.

The Cooksey review of UK Health Research Funding identified ways of ensuring the more effective translation of research into health and economic benefit and sets out a critical pathway for the translation of health research into healthcare improvement. The review identified 2 gaps in the translational pathway: one occurring between basic research and early clinical trials and the second between health technology assessment, health services research and knowledge management.

The first gap is addressed through the range of basic research taking place across Wales. Our main academic partners Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea Universities all have considerable strengths in this area. In particular the Department of Psychological Medicine Cardiff has an international reputation for its basic research work.

MHRNC provides a platform that links the steps on the translational pathway by building on and establishing new collaborations across Wales to carry out research addressing the second gap in translation as well as the first.
